i-TunneL® history

A long, successful road in tunnel lighting.

As a division of Indal WRTL within the Indal group, the i-TunneL® pedigree in road tunnel lighting dates back to the Netherlands in the mid-1940s. Industria bv, a key company within the Group, made extensive developments in systematic tunnel lighting as a consequence of post-war rebuilding and infrastructure modernisation.

Since 1920 the group has been designing, developing and manufacturing safe and robust luminaires for hazardous areas and marine applications. The inherent strength and durability required for these demanding conditions laid the foundations for a successful transference to tunnel lighting.

Another trigger for the development of modern tunnel lighting systems was the energy crisis of the early 1970’s. This resulted in further development of energy efficient luminaire optics and lamps.

Towards the end of the 1990’s, Indal WRTL was formed to specialise in the exterior and road tunnel lighting markets.

Subsequently, intelligent lighting control systems were introduced for road tunnel lighting. Hardware and software design had to be specifically developed to provide the reliability and efficiency that the extreme conditions and sheer scale of the projects demanded.

To meet an increasing requirement for specialist, dedicated road tunnel lighting design and supply, the i-TunneL® division was formed within Indal WRTL. This resulted in a pooling of accumulated expertise to deliver the one source supply concept. With this approach, and with the extensive list of successfully completed projects in the UK and Europe, i-TunneL® is now a major force in road tunnel lighting.
