People use spaces where they feel comfortable and safe. When it is dark it is human nature to use well-lit footpaths and streets where you feel more secure and can see clearly.

In the vast majority of the UK, sodium lighting remains the most common. Amongst the many issues associated with this traditional form of street lighting is the colour of light it produces.

The appearance of objects is significantly altered with sodium street lighting so that they become orange, sepia or even black. This has some undesirable impacts in terms of people using spaces lit this way: objects can be difficult to distinguish, shapes difficult to make out, distances difficult to judge, features and faces difficult to identify. In the event of an incident, giving identifiable detail such as describing vehicles or people can become unreliable.
