As with every local authority, the cost of street lighting is high. Derbyshire County Council spent around £5.5 million on lighting and maintaining luminaires during 2010. The electricity to power these street lights cost a further £2.7 million.
The Government's Carbon Reduction Commitment Energy Efficiency Scheme is a mandatory system aimed at improving energy efficiency and cutting emissions in large organisations. These organisations are responsible for around 10% of the UK's emissions. The scheme features a range of drivers to encourage the development of energy management strategies.
Derbyshire County Council has implemented a series of measures to improve its financial outlay and environmental impact. Amongst these is its commitment to LED technology demonstrated with the replacement of traditional sodium street lighting with Stela luminaires.
The Council has installed Stela on a number of schemes in the region, but the most recent at Amber Heights is to be used as a showcase area to demonstrate the white light solution to interested parties, including media.
Although the installation is still in its infancy, calculations are already showing energy savings of 68%. Together with the elimination of maintenance, reduction of light pollution, spill and glare the Stela solution is set to make quite an impression for all those who participate in the demonstration.
