Indal/WRTL Highlights Olympic Pedal Power

Olympics

As part of the on-going refurbishment at Scunthorpe’s Quibell Park velodrome and athletics track in North Lincolnshire, Indal WRTL’s Mario Floodlights were installed to supply high performance yet affordable floodlighting.

“The velodrome surface and perimeter fencing were upgraded in 2006,” commented a North Lincolnshire council spokesperson. “At over £400,000, this cost more than expected, so we had to delay the lighting installation.

“To control costs, we asked Indal WRTL whether we could reduce the number of columns, yet still achieve good illuminance and an even distribution. They helped devise an excellent scheme with their Mario floodlights that halved the number of columns required.”

The new floodlighting, installed by local contractor J. McCanns, comprises 11 columns, each twelve metres high, and topped with three Mario floodlights, fitted with 600W high pressure sodium lamps.

Mario is a multipurpose top quality floodlight, with five different versions of reflector which achieve maximum performance and allow a very precise control of luminous flux. Suitable for lamps up to 600W (SON-T) and 400W (QI), Mario’s iDual innovative fixing and orienting system offers two mounting possibilities to make maintenance easier.

The full velodrome track is 500 metres in perimeter length, with banking, around the Scunthorpe & District Athletics Club track. After the re-opening of the resurfaced velodrome in 2006, the European 200m record was beaten during the first meet. The facility is in line for training purposes during the 2012 Olympics, and the whole complex includes track and other sports facilities for Scunthorpe and the surrounding area.
