New Lights Signal the Way

Newcross

A brand new south London train depot, has recently received a spectacular lighting makeover by Indal WRTL Exterior Lighting. The new depot at New Cross Gate is part of Transport for London’s investment programme, to restructure and provide better rail links between south and east London.

David Webster (DW) Limited, the organisation responsible for the installation of all external lighting at the depot, enlisted the lighting expertise of Indal WRTL to complete the project. This project required a high lighting standard, as the depot will be primarily used to carry out high detail inspections where all white lights are required. Indal WRTL and DW worked together to design a lighting solution, that would meet the high standards of joint venture client Balfour Beatty/Carillion and the concerns of local residents and the Lewisham Planning department.

The project faced many challenges early on, due to specific technical and safety requirements of the Balfour Beatty/Carillion joint venture, in addition to pressure from neighbouring residents to minimise invasive light from the new site.

Indal WRTL’s senior designer Tim Baker submitted the winning proposal, which would deliver a sustainable cost effective lighting solution. More than 800 of Indal WRTL’s lanterns have now been installed at the depot, ranging from bollards, Mario flood lights, ARC and IQN lanterns. All lanterns were specifically selected to meet the high lighting levels of the site.

The Indal WRTL bollard is a versatile and robust luminaire that provides a good value light solution. The robust IP65 lantern complies with BS EN 60598, making it the ideal lantern to light up the depot’s footpaths.

Mario floodlights were chosen for their excellent control of light. The horizontally mounted floodlight has an asymmetric optical beam, set at 60 degrees. This makes the light positioning easier, while achieving an important reduction in light pollution.

ARC lanterns were selected for their excellent non spill light distribution, energy efficiency IP66 environmental protection and 99% recyclable aluminium body. That helps to improve the safety of inspection engineers working at night.

The multipurpose IQN luminaire was the ideal lantern, for all areas in the depot that were unsuitable for columns. The wall mounted lantern has a high impact resistant refractor lens system, which offers an effective light distribution.
