Floodlighting Highlights Dock Development
WRTL Exterior Lighting’s i-MasT division, as sub contractor to Braham Electrical Ltd., has designed, manufactured and installed a major new floodlighting scheme at Victoria Docks, Belfast, to illuminate Stena Line’s new VT4 terminal.
Part of the expansion of Belfast Docks and the surrounding area, the Victoria Docks land reclamation and development project promises to bring about more efficient crossings and provide easier access to the M2 motorway.
WRTL installed twenty three 30 metre high masts, each carrying up to eight Mario floodlights, in a limited time and within budget. The design specified different luminance levels for each operating area so a combination of 400W and 600W SON-T lamps were used to illuminate Stena Line’s £37m facility, which operates the ferry service from Belfast to Stranraer.
In addition, the installation required extensive geotechnical works due to the state of the reclaimed land where extensive deep piling with concrete plinths was required for each mast to carry the point loading. The new developments include a new container port, new passenger and freight ferry terminals plus infrastructure, buildings and offices, as part of an ongoing 18 year, £630m expansion plan to accommodate doubling of the port’s traffic by 2025.
Jim Graham of Braham Electrical commented:
“WRTL i-MasT division provided the complete scheme from design to installation and they handle the ongoing maintenance contract. The total cost was competitive and their format meant that we only had to manage one sub-contractor, which was much more time-efficient.”
