Wolverhampton City Council has recently installed dimmable LED street lights to a large residential area as part of a comprehensive highways package which will ensure high energy savings.

Central government awarded transport capital funding to the local authority following a successful Local Transport Plan (LTP) application detailing the strength and effectiveness of their strategy. The council decided to invest part of the funding on improvements to footpaths and carriageways on the Rakegate Estate in Oxley.

The new pilot scheme is the first in the UK to uses more than 100 Indal WRTL Stela LED street lights fitted with a dimming mechanism which reduces the lighting level to 40% of their full brightness between the hours of midnight and 6am during winter months.

Independent laboratory testing and existing installations show that Stela reduces energy consumption and cuts carbon emissions by up to 68% compared to traditional street lighting when used at full capacity. Introducing dimming guarantees energy and carbon savings will be greater still.

Stela is manufactured using a large proportion of recycled materials and 50% of the existing street lighting columns were reused making the scheme even more cost effective.

Currently more than 80 local authorities across the UK have installed Stela LED street lights and have all welcomed its lighting performance innovative design, cost saving capability and almost maintenance-free assurance.
